Finding My Fitness at 52: My CrossFit Journey

image3 2

My name is Chris Jones, and I’m a 52-year-old father of four living in Hatfield, Hertfordshire. Like many people, I used to think CrossFit wasn’t for me—that it was just a bunch of headbangers doing crazy workouts. But today, New Horizon CrossFit (NHCF) has become a huge part of my life. It’s where I’ve found not just fitness, but also friendship, confidence, and purpose.

If you’re curious about CrossFit in Hertfordshire, or you’re wondering whether CrossFit is possible over 50, here’s my journey.

How I Discovered New Horizon CrossFit

I first heard about CrossFit back in 2017, but I didn’t take it seriously at the time. Fast-forward a few years, and a woman I was dating—an experienced CrossFitter—encouraged me to give it a try.

My first workout at New Horizon CrossFit Hatfield was in July 2023. It was a Saturday partner workout, and I quickly learned two things:

  1. Syncro reps are brutal if you don’t stay in rhythm.
  2. The energy of the community makes hard work fun.

Even though I was nervous and intimidated by the jargon, the coaches broke everything down, explained the scaling options, and made sure everyone could take part—no matter their fitness level. That was the moment I realised CrossFit was for everyone, not just elite athletes.

Training at New Horizon CrossFit as a 50+ Athlete

One of the best things about CrossFit is that it’s adaptable. At 52, I definitely need more warming up (and my knees provide comic relief with their clicks), but I never feel out of place.

In fact, CrossFit over 50 has given me more strength, stamina, and confidence than I ever imagined. I’ve bulked up, leaned out, and dramatically improved my cardiovascular fitness. People who haven’t seen me for a while often comment on how much I’ve changed—and that’s a powerful motivator to keep going.

Competitions, Hyrox, and New Challenges

Just a year into training, I entered my first CrossFit competition in October 2024. It was a steep learning curve—I didn’t fuel properly, and my calves gave out mid-WOD—but it hooked me. Since then, I’ve taken part in more competitions, usually in a team format, which I love for the camaraderie.

I’ve also taken on Hyrox events, which are great benchmarks of fitness. In May 2024, I raced in London, qualified for the Hyrox World Championships, and ended up competing in Chicago in June 2025. That was an incredible experience and a huge milestone for me personally.

The best part? I now share this passion with my kids. My eldest son and I are even racing together in Oslo this September.

The Community at NHCF

If you’re considering joining a gym in Hatfield, here’s what sets New Horizon CrossFit apart: the community.

At NHCF, the coaching is excellent—every coach has their own style, but all are supportive and committed to helping you progress. The members are welcoming, whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned athlete. And beyond the workouts, there are gym socials, coffee catch-ups, and even pub nights that make the community feel like a second family.

Lessons I’ve Learned Along the Way

For anyone thinking of starting CrossFit—especially later in life—here’s my advice:

  • Prioritise mobility and flexibility. Recovery is just as important as training.
  • Leave your ego at the door. You’ll be outlifted by people half your age, and that’s okay.
  • Start the advanced skills early. Things like muscle-ups and handstand walks take time to master, so begin with the basics and progress gradually.

My biggest challenge? Mobility. Movements like the duck walk, overhead squats, and SOTS press remind me daily of what I need to work on. But my favourite workouts are on the ski erg or rower, where I can pace myself and push hard without burning out.

Why New Horizon CrossFit is Worth It

CrossFit has given me so much more than just fitness. It’s improved my health, boosted my confidence, and given me a community I’m proud to be part of. At 52, I feel fitter, stronger, and more motivated than I did in my 40s.

If you live in Hatfield or Hertfordshire and you’re looking for a fitness community that supports every age and ability, I can’t recommend New Horizon CrossFit enough. Whether you’re new to exercise, getting back into training, or curious about CrossFit over 50, this is the place to start.

Take it from me—it could change your life
